TWO teenagers have died in swimming accidents in North and East Yorkshire.
One of the victims got into difficulties while swimming in a former brick quarry near Goole.
Andrew Russell, 16, of Adeline Street, Goole, failed to resurface as he was cooling off in yesterday's baking sun.
The incident happened at the Blue Lagoon at Back End, Westfield, near Goole, at about 1pm, and prompted warnings from Humberside Police about the dangers of unsupervised swimming in open water.
Paramedics and firefighters waded into the water-filled quarry and were later joined by the Humberside Police underwater search team.
Andrew was recovered from the lagoon more than an hour after he first disappeared and a RAF helicopter airlifted him to Hull Royal Infirmary where staff tried to resuscitate him.
Humberside police inspector Steve Page said Andrew, who had just left school, was certified dead at the hospital at about 4pm.
He said the lagoon was privately owned and was accessible on foot. Its depth was variable and at the spot where Andrew was found the water was about 8ft deep. A second teenager, also aged 16, died after getting into difficulties in an outdoor swimming pool in Scarborough. John Rudderham, from Hull, died in Scarborough General Hospital yesterday afternoon. He had got into difficulties in the Atlantis outdoor swimming pool on Sunday afternoon.
