ABOUT 150 bales of straw went up in flames at a former airfield just outside York - but firefighters were able to save hundreds more from the blaze.
The fire happened at Acaster Airfield late yesterday afternoon.
Two pumps from York attended and the crews were able to isolate the burning bales to prevent the fire spreading, with the aid of a water bowser.
Later in the evening firefighters were keeping a "watching brief" on the blackened and still burning bales. The cause of the fire was not yet known.
