THIS is a big week for the bicycle. At the weekend, thousands of cyclists will arrive in York for a mass Millennium rally. And today is Bike to Work Day when everyone was encouraged to swap car seat for saddle.
Among those who took up the challenge was York MP Hugh Bayley. But his experience shows up one limitation of the bicycle. The powers-that-be say cycling is a security risk. They are not worried for the safety of a minister of the crown, but for his red boxes. So those boxes have to travel separately from our green-minded MP - at least until someone designs a saddlebag safe.
