A POLICE chief today lavished praise on celebrating England fans who gave York city centre a carnival atmosphere - while behaving themselves.
Superintendent John Lacy said the streets, particularly Micklegate, were thronged with supporters after England's victory over Germany but their behaviour was exemplary.
"I take my hat off to them all," said Supt Lacy, who was in charge of policing on Saturday night, when extra officers were on duty to deal with York racegoers mingling with football fans.
"Credit where credit is due. Flags were flying and there was a carnival atmosphere. It was incredible.
"There were a few arrests relating to race-goers who had over-indulged, but none relating to the football. I would just like to give them a pat on the back."
