THE council will again soon decide whether or not to give the go-ahead for a proposed development at Clifford's Tower and the River Foss. The plans, which were rejected last time round, have been revised but place the proposed shops only a further 33ft away from Clifford's Tower.
The architecture of the new buildings is truly appalling, not at all in keeping with the beauty of the museums around this important conservation area.
The development will block the view of Clifford's Tower from the bridges over the River Foss in Piccadilly and Fossgate.
We want no building to take place on the Clifford's Tower side of the River Foss. The Piccadilly side of the river could, indeed, be made much better with some tasteful development and facilities. The impressive location of the City Screen over the River Ouse makes it a great place to visit and the Foss could be enjoyed in a similar way, with extensive views from the Piccadilly side across to Clifford's Tower. Aerial photographs show the lack of open recreation space in the city. We would like to see the small and well-used grassy area around the tower extended across the car park so residents and tourists can enjoy this space.
There are plenty of other sites in the city centre, such as the old supermarket space on George Hudson Street, which could be developed for this kind of purpose. If you agree with us write and tell the council at the Planning Department, 9 St Leonard's Place, before it's too late.
