THE scores of motorcyclists who invade Helmsley Market Place at weekends should be made welcome, say Ryedale councillors.
But the regular influx should be monitored at peak weekends.
Councillors heard there had been two objections, from Myles Moorby, of Helmsley Antiquarian and Secondhand Books, and from Pickering resident Patrick Cooper. They complained the motorcyclists were "taking over" the market place, occupying space allocated for car parking.
Motorcycling councillor Debbie Aubrook said Helmsley Market Place was a "wonderful gathering place". She said police were clamping down on those who were speeding. "I am sorry if people look on us as monsters," she added.
Coun Alan Farnaby said the council should not discourage the motorcyclists. He had recently seen a gathering of the machines in the town. "It looked like a gala - a real splash of colour."
Coun Arthur Aslett said: "These people are on the road legally. We should attract them and provide them with facilities."
