MICHAEL Vaughan was dramatically pulled out of Yorkshire's match against Kent at Headingley so that he could dash to Birmingham to join up with the Eng-land squad as possible replacement for the injured Mark Ramprakash.

The Yorkshire opener had to stop off at his flat in Sheffield last night on the way in order to pick up his England kit.

Vaughan was waiting first thing this morning to discover whether or not he will be making his home Test debut, but if he does not play he will return to the Yorkshire match.

If he is selected for England, however, Yorkshire will replace him with either Vic Craven or Anthony McGrath, both of whom reported to Headingley this morning. His replacement will be allowed to bat.

Paul Hutchison, Yorkshire's 12th man, substituted on the field for Vaughan during yesterday's evening session.

Vaughan, who was not originally chosen for the first Test because England felt he needed more time to recover from his hand injury, said before leaving Headin-gley: "It will be a great honour if I am chosen for my home debut and it won't matter one iota to me whether I was in the original squad or was brought in at the last minute.

"I am just wanting to focus my mind on playing and I want to get to the team ho-tel as quickly as I can so that I think about it quietly.

"I did not know for certain that I had been called up until the tea interval but I got the general idea when I saw the pho-tographers waiting for me to come off the field and I also knew that Ramprakash was nursing an injury.

"It was understandable why I was not in the original squad at Edgbaston but I feel in very good form after my 94 at Durham last week and feel confident that I can do well."

Vaughan said his mum and dad would both be at Edgbaston today, regardless of whether he was playing.

"One of the advantages of being on a cen-tral contract is that you get complimentary tickets," grinned Vaughan.
