THE firm behind roadworks that caused big tailbacks on the A64 has launched its own inquiry into how a lane was left closed to rush-hour traffic.

The Highways Agency has begun a "full investigation" into the incident which led to a lane being closed on the road's west-bound carriageway at Copmanthorpe Top during Monday's evening rush hour.

The agency said this was despite a condition of the contract for the work saying any lane closures required during the work were lifted in time for the late af-ternoon busy period.

A spokesman for the contractors involved, Amey Highways, said was carrying out small areas of resurfacing work on the A64 westbound carriageway between Copmanthorpe and Buckles Inn.

"Unfortunately, work was not completed in time for the late afternoon rush

hour, leading to some traffic congestion.

"Amey Highways would like to apologise for the inconvenience and delay caused to drivers.

"We have already begun our own internal inquiry to establish the reasons for the

delay in completing the work and will also be co-operating fully with the

Highways Agency's own investigation team."
