Running a marathon isn't easy at the best of times, but doing so immediately after swimming 2.4 miles and cycling 112 miles takes an effort nearing the superhuman.
That, though, is what former York sportsman Mark Thorn did when completing his first-ever Iron Man triathlon.
Competing in the event in Lanzarote, where he has lived for the past eight years, Thorn - an ex-York City Baths Club swimmer and former Archbishop Holgate School pupil - finished 223rd out of 658 tough competitors from all over the world.
Hoping to complete the course within 12 hours, he beat his aim by a mere 56 seconds, finishing in 11hrs 59mins 4secs.
Such was his success that he now plans to return to his homeland later this summer to compete in the Wolverhampton Iron Man contest in August.
