ROY Wallington, head of City of York strategy and commissioning, appeals to the York Natural Environmental Trust, who are opposing development on the green field site at Osbaldwick, to "work together" with the council to provide "much-needed homes" (May 24).

Barry Potter from the trust points out that the council has an "expansionist policy" which damages the environment while bringing no benefit to York citizens.

The development on the Metcalfe Lane site at Osbaldwick confirms this suspicion.

At a stroke it would destroy the habitat of the varied wildlife in the area. Most of the trees, hawthorn hedgerows and open meadowland will cease to exist.

One of the last open spaces available to the many people living in the Tang Hall, Osbaldwick and Appletree Village areas will become urban sprawl.

How can Mr Wallington expect the local residents and YNET to 'work together' with the council to achieve this!

The council should be looking to renovate existing buildings and re-use sites before destroying one of the city's last green open spaces.
