THERE were differing fortunes for Simon Dyson and Nick Ludwell in the second round of the Wales Open at Celtic Manor.

While Malton and Norton's Dyson cruised into the third round, Selby's Ludwell suffered as he shot 78 and missed the cut.

For Dyson it was an impressive show of consistency as he followed his opening par round of 72 with the same score again to comfortably make the cut by two shots.

He currently lies seven shots off the lead, held by home hero Ian Woosnam, who shot a second round 69, and Zimbabwe's Mark McNulty, who hit an impressive 67.

But for Ludwell he followed a promising first round 73 with a nightmare 78 to finish the two rounds on 151 with the cut being made at 146.

ENGLISH and Yorkshire champion Emma Duggleby helped fire up the county's push for a third consecutive title in the Northern Counties Championship this week.

Needing a victory to book their place at the national finals in Dorset in September, where they would be defending the English title, Yorkshire eased through at Ilkley with Duggleby in strong form.

The Malton and Norton club member notched a six and five success as Yorkshire strolled to a 4-1 Roses victory over Lancashire.

However 28-year-old Duggleby had to work a little harder in the 6-0 whitewash of Northumberland when it took a last hole win to see off the challenge of Julie Ross.

As reported in yesterday's Evening Press she was victorious on Thursday when Cheshire were hammered 8- to ensure that Yorkshire would go through to defend their English Championship title at Parkstone, Suffolk in September.

In the singles against Cheshire she beat Olivia Briggs 2 and 1 and also teamed up with Middlesbrough's Jayne Gartry to win her foursomes.

Yesterday, against Cumbria Duggleby helped ensure the victory as Yorkshire completed the job in style with a 9-0 whitewash.

In the singles Duggleby scored a four and three victory over Viles.
