FIRE-EATING merchants of medieval mirth have heralded the launch of York's Early Music Festival.
A skilful display of juggling and fire-eating by The Grinnigogs, a team of colourful-costumed jesters, got the festival off to a flying start.
The festival, which runs until July 16 at venues across the city, is celebrating two complementary themes - the music of the York Mystery Plays and the 250th anniversary of the death of J S Bach.
Highlights will include the internationally acclaimed chamber orchestra Ensemble 415 presenting an evening dedicated to the German composer at the Jack Lyons Concert Hall, and lutenist Nigel North, who will give two concerts - one at All Saints' Church, in North Street, and another at Harewood House.
Tickets and festival details are available from the National Centre for Early Music at St Margaret's Church, in Walmgate, or by telephoning the centre on 01904 632220.
