A WELL-TO-DO Chinese family who moved to York two months ago is looking to leave, claiming they are victims of racial abuse from neighbours.
The family, who did not wish to be named, paid cash for a big house in an up-market neighbourhood but are considering moving back to Leeds.
The claims follow the jailing of a 17-year-old from York after a racist attack on a Turkish shop assistant as a revenge attack for the murders of two Leeds supporters in Istanbul.
And the Evening Press has also been told of an Iranian family said to have been so harassed and intimidated by racist neighbours that the father moved his wife and children out for their own safety, and has since joined them.
These cases, reported to York's Racial Equality Network, highlight the terror many ethnic minority residents suffer in York and add to the growing list of race-hate crimes reported by the Evening Press in recent months.
Recent reports include an Asian restaurant manager who was subjected to a vicious and unprovoked assault and called York the most racist place he had ever lived in in this country speaking of an "underlying feeling of danger".
Superintendent John Lacy of York police said: "We understand the difficulties and are prepared to change and make the reporting of incidents easier.
