MR Gilmore of Thistleton Court wrongly castigated the City of York Council for allowing large numbers of open top buses onto the city's streets (May 24). To say that the council is a "waste of time" is to misunderstand the legislative position.
The Thatcher Government deregulated buses and allowed the present free-for- all. The city council can only intervene, if a vehicle is unroadworthy.
Residents who consider themselves to be adversely affected by these buses, must properly address their concerns to their MP.
Also be grateful that you do not live in Edinburgh. There, a similar procession of these buses is supplemented by a bagpiper, every few hundred yards along Princes Street!
