Matthew Hoggard struck with the first ball of the match at Headingley today after Yorkshire had won the toss against Zimbabwe and put the Tourists in to bat.

Zimbabwe rallied for a while, but went on to lose two further wickets and were struggling on 60 for three after 23 overs.

There were two debutants in the Yorkshire side in wicketkeeper Simon Guy and left-handed batsman Michael Lumb, son of former Yorkshire opener Richard.

Zimbabwe, keen to make amends for their innings and 209 runs defeat in the first Test at Lord's, made four changes, one of which was the inclusion of 17-year-old wicketkeeper Tatenda Taibu who seems likely to make his Test debut at Trent Bridge next week.

Having been subjected to a hostile spell of fast bowling from Darren Gough at Lord's, Zimbabwe were anticipating the same from another Yorkshireman in the shape of Hoggard whose aggressive pace has put him on the threshold of a Test place this season.

Hoggard did not disappoint and his first ball from the Kirkstall Lane end went off Grant Flower's bat and pad out towards cover where Gary Fellows raced in to swoop on a good catch.

Paul Hutchison shared the new ball and Murray Goodwin played a shot off the meat of the bat to short leg where it struck Vic Craven painfully on the shin and he had to leave the field for attention, 12th man Greg Lambert coming on in his place.

Craven returned to the action for a while, but was in some discomfort and had to limp off again a few overs later.

Gary Whittall took a couple of boundaries off off-spinner James Middlebrook as the score breezed on to 50 for one in the 16th over.

Four runs later, Goodwin offered no stroke at Hamilton and was given out lbw, although the ball seemed to hit him quite high up the pad and Zimbabwe lost a third wicket at 59 when Taibu was bowled by Gary Fellows in the medium pacer's third over.
