FEARS that York Wasps star Andy Preston had suffered a leg fracture in Sunday's game against Hunslet have been allayed.

However, the utility back will definitely miss Friday night's clash with Rochdale Hornets and probably Monday's encounter at Batley after badly twisting his knee in the first five minutes of Sunday's match.

Wasps coach Garry Atkins, after being hit with the news yesterday that winger Dean Thomas will miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken leg against Hunslet, was fearing Preston too may be out for the remainder of the campaign.

However, X-rays yesterday afternoon have shown no long-term damage.

Atkins said today: "There is no break or fracture thankfully. It's just bruised, sore and swollen.

"However, he definitely won't be playing on Friday and is very doubtful for Monday.

"We're not even sure about the following week. It just depends how quickly it heals. Sometimes it can be quick and sometimes it can take ages."

Preston had been helped off the Huntington Stadium field just five minutes into Sundays clash after suffering the injury.

Atkins said: "He did it in a tackle early on. His foot was static and he got a bang from the side, and twisted his leg a bit."

Meanwhile, loan player Craig Robinson's immediate future with the Wasps was set to be sorted out today.

The scrum-half's second month on loan from Keighley Cougars ends this weekend, but he is keen to see out the season with York.

Speaking to the Evening Press, he said: "I'm pleased with the way things have turned out although I'm a bit disappointed with some of the results."

Robinson's loan period ends after Friday's home clash with Rochdale, however he was hoping to arrange an extension with Atkins and chief executive Ann Garvey.

Much will depend on whether Keighley want to call him back, but Robinson stressed: "I want to give 100 per cent to York until the end of the season and then re-assess the situation."

Robinson also said he would jump at the chance of staying with the Wasps on a more permanent basis, if the terms are right.

He has been offered a new one-year contract with the Cougars but will not commit himself until he has discussed his future with Garvey.

"I would like to know what the plans are for next year and the structure," said Robinson.

"I came here just after the trouble with Dean Robinson (former coach) and Garry (Atkins) is trying to sort things out.

"If he is appointed coach I'll have a chat with them and see what we can come up with.

"I'd be keen on staying if the offer was right and things changed a little bit."

Although he is keen to keep him until the end of the current campaign, Atkins said today that he will not make any long-term deal with Robinson just yet.

He is in charge until the end of the season only and does not yet know whether he will get the job permanently.

"There are no plans for any permanent signings, because the club don't know what is happening yet as regards who will be coach next season," said Atkins.

"It's silly to make signings if somebody else is going to come in as they might not want him."
