There is an air of satisfaction at York Cricket Club after their useful start to the season.

But officials are understandably disappointed that they were thwarted by the Yorkshire League's new points scoring system.

They only collected one point from the good performance that they put up against champions Doncaster Town last Saturday.

Doncaster's bowlers failed to bowl out York, earning for Town six points for what is called an 'incomplete win' while York's performance, under the old scoring system would have been regarded as a 'losing draw'.

The irony, however, was that the rest of the league clubs were awarded three points each because their grounds were unfit, leaving York stranded at the bottom of the table.

Nevertheless the York side, seven of whom are under the age of 21, picked themselves up and not only defended their total of 178-7 against The Yorkshire Academy, but ended the day with a 28 run victory by bowling the Yorkshire starlets out for 150 - no mean achievement.

Another big test will come at St George's Road tomorrow where York face last season's runners-up, Harrogate, who were not entirely satisfied at the way they could not bowl out Appleby-Frodingham on Bank Holiday Monday.

Harrogate had to settle for a six pointer which puts them level with York on 9 points after two games.

Dave Pennett, the former Notts and Bradford and Bingley bowler, and spinner Simon Kippax will pose a big threat to York's batsmen.

York are without their opening left hander, Marcus Wood, who is helping Pocklington Rugby Club enjoy this weekend's celebratory tour after adding the Yorkshire Shield to their North East Division Two title last Monday.

Wood's place will be taken by Mike Mortimer, another left handed bat.

Harrogate's skipper, John Proud makes two changes on last weekend's side, Ryan Bradshaw taking the wicket keeper's gloves and Oliver Hutton - St Leonard Hutton's grandson - taking the places of Matthew Cousins and South African Neil Levenson.

Scarborough were unable to repeat the flyer that they produced last year when they enjoyed the only win of the first day's play with the rest of the league clubs rained off.

But they made up for lost time with a battling two wicket win over North Marine Road visitors Rotherham Town on Monday.

Tomorrow they are without their No 3 bat, Mark Cowell, who is at a wedding, so Neil Fletcher is named as a replacement for the home game with Barnsley.
