NEW Earswick Indoor Bowls Club have now completed all their league and knockout competitions finals and in the Ladies singles final, Pat Walker played Shirley Hopwood aiming to complete a hat-trick of titles.

Walker soon got into her stride winning the first seven ends with singles and a four at the eighth and gave her an 11-0 lead. Hopwood then won the next end with a single but Walker went on to take the next three ends bringing the score to 18-1. Although Hopwood won the next two ends it was only a matter of time before Walker reached the winning post, running out an easy winner with the final score 21-4. This is the third consecutive title won for Walker.

In the Men's singles final Ken Lippett played Ken Harrison. Lippett started the better and after five ends of play led 4-1. After 14 ends, with the lead changing hands several times, Lippett held the lead 10-8. Harrison then struck form and won the next five ends to romp home winning 21-10.

In the Ladies knockout pairs final Marlene Walker and Maureen Hill played Margaret Moss and Gill Clark.

Moss and Clark started the better and after eight ends of play held the lead 11-3.

The 12th end saw the score levelled thanks to two fours by Walker and Hill.

The next four ends went to Moss and Clark opening up a 21-12 lead and with just five ends remaining looked favourites to take the title. But hitting form, Walker and Hill won the last five ends to snatch the title with a final of 23-21.

In the Men's knockout pairs John Allan and Ken Carter played Roy Robinson and Dave Birch in a game where the lead changed hands on numerous occasions. Robinson and Birch led 6-4 after five ends, changing after the eighth end to Allan and Carter leading 9-6.

After three more ends the lead reverted to Robinson and Birch 12-9, but a stronger finish by Allan and Carter ensured them of the title with a final score of 20-18.

The Ladies knockout triples produced a ding-dong battle.

Pat Walker, Margaret Moss and Gill Clark played Betty Holtby, Brenda Keller and Anne Goodwin.

Five ends of play saw Clark's team leading 6-3 and after a further five ends Clark's triples had increased their lead to 14-4. However, Goodwin's team then won the next five ends to bring the score to 14-13 in favour of Clark's team and with three ends remaining an exciting finish was in prospect.

The next end went to Clark's team with a two, but Goodwin's team won the last two ends with singles seeing Clark's team holding on to win 16-15.

The Ladies knockout fours competition was all one way traffic seeing Pat Storey, Jean Bartnett, Ann Thompson and Val Fort beating Carol Williams, Maureen Wood, Moyra Headley and Shirley Hopwood 28-15.

In the Men's handicap singles Ralph Tiplady having giving his opponent Les Jackson a five shot start, produced a strong second half to the match to eventually win 21-18.

The Men's league pairs final saw Dave Kermode and Malcolm Beavers come back from being behind throughout the match to beat Ken Plowman and Bob Machen 22-20.

The Men's league triples final saw the winners Dave Kermode, Malcolm Beavers and Barry Johnson leading from start to finish and eventually beat John Allan, John Sewell and Eric Ward 21-10.

The Men's league fours final took on a similar course to the men's triples final seeing Malcolm Beaves, Alan Hughes, Ralph Tiplady and Rod Walker leading from start to finish to beat their opponents Dave Sykes, Tony Taylor, John Bartnett and Gordon Storey 24-15.

In the Mixed pairs league finals Dot and Barry Johnson playing for Wilf Anderson's team held off a late challenge from their opponents Chris Beavers and Rod Walker to win 22-16.

In the Mixed triples league final Rosemary Fawcett, Judi Pavis and rod Fawcett playing for Rod Walker's team beat Dot Johnson, Barry Johnson and Graheme Watson (correct) 25-14.

The Mixed fours league final produced an excellent game and an exciting finish seeing Pat Walker, Carol Pink, Dennis Pink and Rod Walker coming back from behind to beat Colin Fawcett, Joan Lister, Dottie Kay and Alf Lewis 23-22.
