THERE will be no going round the bend at Redcar's opening meeting of the season tomorrow.
After the recent heavy rainfall, it has been decided that the ground in the back straight is unsafe for racing, so two of tomorrow's scheduled races, handicaps over nine and 11 furlongs, have been abandoned.
As a result, two of the remaining races will be divided to make up a six-race programme which will be staged entirely on the straight course.
These changes will not affect Whizz Kid, who is fancied to win the Manny Bernstein Bookmakers Credit Division Fillies' Handicap over five furlongs for the second successive year.
Trained by Milton Bradley, a man with an uncanny touch with sprinters, Whizz Kid underlined her well-being with a runaway win at Warwick last week.
Very much at home on soft ground, Whizz Kid can follow-up tomorrow under a 6lb penalty, with the competent apprentice Clare Bryan again taking the mount.
Bouncing Bowlder can make it third-time lucky in the Manny Bernstein Bookmakers Maiden Auction Stakes.
Mark Johnson's speedy colt finished a good fourth to the highly-regarded Romantic Myth first time out at Ripon and was then narrowly beaten at Musselburgh on his next start.
Bouncing Bowlder deserves another chance here to get his head in front. Darryll Holland takes the mount.
Birchwood Sun, in the frame in all this three races this season, can get back on top in the Manny Bernstein Selling Stakes.
The evergreen ten-year-old, trained by Michael Dods, will be partnered by Jason Weaver, who knows him so well.
At Brighton, Kieren Fallon can lift the Epsom Trainers' Association Showcase Handicap on Miss Hit.
Successful on this course three weeks ago, Gerard Butler's filly crossed the line a peck ahead of Forgotten Times, but was being eased in the closing stages.
Miss Hit has since risen 6lb in the ratings, but that extra burden may not be enough to anchor her in this six-furlong dash.
Fallon can also take the Darley Stallions Support the Millennium Appeal Maiden Stakes on Tolstoy.
Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Tolstoy showed obvious ability when finishing runner-up in both his starts last season as a juvenile. He promises to develop into a money-spinner this time round.
Moon At Night (5.00) is another worthy of support.
Michael Robert's mount won two of his last three races last season and looks capable of adding to his scoresheet this term. Furthermore, he is a previous course-and distance winner, which counts for plenty on this tricky track.
Mick Ryan's horses are running into form and his Omniheat (3.00) has strong claims of opening his account tomorrow.
A winner at Doncaster on her final outing last season, Omniheat made a most encouraging reappearance at Windsor last month when she was beaten less than two lengths into third by Soller Bay. She can step up on that performance here and is awarded the Nap vote.
