THREE of the York and District Indoor Bowls Club league play-off finals were decided on extra ends.
In the Mixed Pairs final, husband and wife Trish and Mal Harrison appeared to be coasting to victory when 20-10 up after 17 ends against Dot Kennelly and Pete Long, but Kennelly and Long scored a four on the 18th end and won the remaining three ends to force an extra end, which they won with a single to snatch the title.
Gill Clark, Yvonne Dale, Dave Dale and Ray Clark led 16-8 after 15 ends in the Mixed Fours final but Brenda Love, Chris Holmes, Greg Love and Dennis Sanderson won the remaining six ends to force an extra end. Ray Clark's team regained their composure to take the extra end and the title with a single.
There was a thrilling finish to the Ladies Triples final. Brenda Love, Shirley Ogden and Chris Sissons scored a six on the seventh end to lead 10-4.
A four to their opponents Betty Richardson, Clarice Johnston and Linda Harrison on the ninth end cut the deficit to 10-9.
Sissons' triple won four of the next six ends to lead 16-11 and with only three ends remaining looked favourites to win the title, but a Harrison's team scored three on the next end and two singles on the remaining ends to level the scores at 16-16.
Sissons was a shot down when she delivered the last bowl of the extra end. Her wood just missed taking the winning bowl and the title went to Harrison's team.
Graham Brooke and Mal Harrison produced a stronger second half of the game to beat Doug Mitchell and Ken Ogden 21-18 in the Men's Pairs final.
The Ladies Pairs final was one way traffic. Betty Richardson and Mary Wreglesworth led 11-0 after just five ends and although their opponents Betty Ellwood and Helen Walker rallied for a short time they were never able to get back on terms. Richardson and Wreglesworth eventually won 25-9.
In the Men's Triples final Graham Instone, John and David Stroughair were level 18-18 against Les Redhead, Anthony Scruton and Barry Walker after ten ends. The Stroughair trio won the next six ends to lead 16-8 and a four on the last end clinched a 20-9 victory.
Alan Storey, Stuart Smith, Pete Littlewood and John Emmerson won the first five ends of the Men's Fours final to lead 7-0. Their opponents Dave Poynter, John Bentley, Ken Powdrell and Ray Gilbert opened their account on the next end with a three, but the next five ends went to Emmerson's team, who were leading 21-4 and went on to win 26-11.
There was an exciting finish to the Mixed Triples final. Carol Banks, Steve Sanderson and Helen Walker appeared to have the game sewn up when leading 18-6. Their opponents Jeanette Coulson, Ken Robertson and Eddie Howcroft then scored a three, a two and a six to be only 17-19 down with one end to play. Walker's triple kept their nerve and took the last end with a single shot to win 20-17.
In the Men's Veteran Triples final Ken Walker, Dave McCowan and Alwyn Johnson held off a late challenge by Tom Yorke, Peter Littlewood and Geoff Mooring to win 20-19.
