VILLAGES in North Yorkshire were on full alert today after two amber flood warnings were issued by the Environment Agency,
Buttercrambe Mill and Stamford Bridge, near York, were given the warnings as the bloated River Derwent remained dangerously high.
The amber alert means floods are very likely on areas of low-lying land near the riverside.
The Ouse, in York, still has a yellow flood warning in place and the Derwent at Malton and Norton is very high.
A spokeswoman for the Environment Agency said river levels would continue to rise slowly throughout the day.
"Forecasters are predicting showers throughout the day," she said "But we are not expecting the rivers to rise much more."
The Swordsman pub, near the Derwent at Stamford Bridge, escaped flooding by a mere 4.5 inches last night.
Landlord Paul Townsend was up until 3am making precautions against the rising waters.
He said: "I pulled half of the carpet up and all the pub furniture. The river rose to 8.8 feet last night. Touch wood it will stay out of the pub."
