THE heartbroken parents of York schoolgirl Lizzie Gilmour have made an emotional plea for help to solve the mystery surrounding her death on the York outer ring road.
Three months after Dave and Rose Gilmour laid their daughter to rest, they say they are trapped in limbo, unable to grieve properly for the 15-year-old because they still do not know the full story.
They are convinced someone must know how she came to be on the A1237 ring road when she was hit by a car and killed at about 8.20pm on Saturday, January 15.
Through tears, Lizzie's mother, Rose, said today: "We cannot begin to grieve properly until we know the truth. At the moment it is just a total mystery. We hear rumours constantly about that Saturday night, but we don't know what to believe.
"I am sitting day after day wondering how she got there. Did she suffer before she died? Was she frightened? Someone must know."
She said: "I can't sleep at night and I cry every day. My life is destroyed now. We are both absolutely devastated."
Mr Gilmour said: "Somebody knows something and we need to know. I am determined to find out."
Mrs Gilmour revealed for the first time that Lizzie was upset when she left her home in St Stephen's Road, Acomb, saying she was going to join a friend who was baby-sitting nearby.
But when the family found she was not there they scoured the area. Police later broke the tragic news. They have said all the evidence points to an accident and recently appealed for fresh information on what happened between Lizzie leaving her home at 6.30pm and the time she died.
Insp Paul Bilton said: "I would again appeal for anyone who saw Lizzie that night or has any information should get in touch."
All information will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Anyone with information should call TC Jack Russell on 01904 631321.
