It is most odd that the request to move troublesome York geese from Rowntree Park to a bird sanctuary in Surrey has been turned down.
Mandarins at the Government department for the removal of wildfowl said it would only move the problem from one area to another. This makes little sense. The geese must go from the park because their droppings are causing a health hazard to children. But there would be no similar risk at a sanctuary specifically established to provide a home for birds like these. With such an intransigent attitude from Whitehall, the geese stand little chance of a reprieve.
