Joker Jimmy Cricket was shaking in his wellies when he crossed the rickety bridge over the York Dungeon's new feature - the pit of despair.
But the irrepressible Irish comic kept a smile firmly on his face despite the pit's bottomless appearance and the millions of skulls peering up eerily from within.
York Dungeon also recruited the help of a panel of happy people, put forward by friends and relatives, to test out the new attraction.
Five fearless challengers including Mark Sellars, a travel consultant from Thorpe Willoughby, Sarah Newell, 25, of Holgate Road, York, and Richard Stainforth, 24, an army private from York, were handed special bravery awards for crossing the bridge with their smiles intact.
Jimmy said: "Last time I was this frightened was when I watched a Frank Carson video.
