York householder Louise Grewer has flipped her lid after the council's rubbish collection policy left her wheelie bin brimming.

Louise, 26, of Minchin Close, Waterside Park, has condemned City of York Council's refuse department for failing to empty her bin for two weeks on the trot.

Louise was initially missed out when wheelie bins were introduced on her estate just over a month ago and when she got her bin she did not receive any instructions.

She said: "I had it emptied twice and there was no problem, but last week it was missed and this week I squashed down all the rubbish so the lid would close. I'm sure of this because I cut my hand doing it."

When Louise's mother took up the issue with the council on her behalf she says she was told the lid may not have been properly shut.

And client services manager Stewart Grieve now suspects it may have been neglected because it was not left in exactly the right place.

He said: "Bins should be placed at the edge of a property where the refuse collectors can easily get to it without it being on a road or footpath, like inside a garden gate or at the end of a drive."

Mrs Grewer said: "I always put it at the end of the drive."

Mr Grieve has assured the Evening Press a special collection for Mrs Grewer will be made.

But the issue has highlighted the delicate demands of the refuse collection crews who may leave a bin unemptied if it contravenes certain guidelines.

Mr Grieve said there was a period of one month's grace for untidy new bin owners to take heed of advice slips issued by collection crews.
