Two men died in accidents involving heavy vehicles on North Yorkshire's roads early today.

The first man was killed when his Vauxhall Corsa car collided with the rear of an Asda lorry on the outskirts of York.

The second fatal crash involved a young local man who died after a collision between a van and a lorry on the A61 at South Stainley between Harrogate and Ripon shortly after 5am.

Police said the man who died in the Harrogate accident, near the Red Lion pub, had been in the van involved in the crash.

A fire service spokesman said crews from Harrogate and Ripon went to the accident, using cutting gear to release the dead man.

The road was likely to be closed until about 10am. No further details were available at the time of going to press.

The York accident happened at about 12.15am today in a parking area off the A64 between Grimston Bar and the Hopgrove roundabout.

North Yorkshire police spokesman Tony Lidgate said the lorry was stationary in the lay-by at the time with its side lamps displayed.

Mr Lidgate added the driver who died was middle-aged and from the West Yorkshire area, while the lorry's driver was from Jarrow.

North Yorkshire fire and rescue spokesman Terry Glover said rescue pumps from York and Acomb and an emergency tender from Tadcaster attended, adding: "We used cutting gear to extricate the casualty."

A pregnant woman was freed by firefighters after a car crashed into a lamppost on Scarborough's foreshore last night..

The woman was taken to Scarborough General Hospital suffering a fractured forearm and shock.

A 60-year-old man suffered facial lacerations and shock.
