The Lord Mayor of York - an outspoken critic of York City's refusal to join a campaign against racism- attended Saturday's game against Darlington.

Councillor Peter Vaughan stood on the terraces with Darlington fan and fellow councillor Steve Galloway at the visitors' end.

Coun Vaughan wrote to York City chairman Douglas Craig last month, imploring him to end the club's stance as the only club in the league not to support the Kick Racism Out of Football campaign.

Coun Vaughan, a Manchester United fan, was not available for comment today but a council spokesman said the Lord Mayor had never said he would boycott York games, despite his views on the club's decision.

"Some councillors have said they personally would boycott games but there is no policy not to attend matches," he said.

"The Lord Mayor has said he would not allow this matter to stop him attending games, and he still stands by his views over the Kick Out Racism campaign."
