Reader's letter
Following the article by Stephen Lewis 'Council Catalogue Of Abuse And Long Hours' (April 5), I wish to express my scepticism that long serving councillors such as Rod Hills and Dave Merrett have laboured under such conditions for so long, while repeatedly offering themselves for re-election.
I suspect that one of the reasons for the article was to prepare the public for the argument that, in future, councillors should be paid for their services.
City of York councillors already enjoy significant expenses to compensate them for their public service. I would therefore hope that, should they become full time employees of the council, that they would forfeit payment for other forms of employment and devote themselves fully to improving the well-being of the citizens of York.
