THE possible closure of the Barbican swimming pool has greatly concerned many of the residents of this estate.

We were surprised that the council were considering a possible closure because, in our opinion, the opportunity that it presents for those of all ages to swim in such an accessible location is a priceless asset to those who regard swimming as one of the healthiest forms of exercise.

The residents who use the pool on a regular basis range from members of the University of the Third Age to business executives and office workers. In addition, many children who attend swimming classes come from St Oswald's School. Other council pools are not readily accessible from this part of the city and it is clear they would not be a suitable substitute because this would involve engaging with other cross city traffic, adding to congestion problems.

With more people living in this central area, the Barbican is an ideal location for all.
