Labour stalwart Ken Cooper is to be honoured for his 37-year commitment to York.
Mr Cooper will be made an honorary alderman following his resignation from City of York Council because of ill health.
It fulfils a lifetime ambition for Mr Cooper, 80, a respected councillor popular with residents of his Bootham ward.
Councillor Ken King, friend and fellow ward representative, said: "Ken loves this city and he always hoped to be made an alderman when he resigned."
Mr Cooper will be appointed the 11th existing alderman in a ceremony next Thursday.
A council spokesman said: "Mr Cooper dedicated much of his life to serving the city he loves.
"This is a chance for the city to show its appreciation."
Mr Cooper resigned last week, prompting a by-election on May 11.
