Backers of tonight's groundbreaking drive-in movie in York today insisted the show must go on, come rain or snow.

Asda at Monks Cross is taking the silver screen into its car park to show the musical blockbuster Grease as the first film in a revival of outdoor cinema.

But with snow forecast for late afternoon, al fresco film fans could be watching summer loving as winter makes an unexpected return outside their car doors.

Gal Shivtiel, from organisers Marketing Store Worldwide, said today: "It is going ahead as scheduled. As long as cars have got windscreen wipers, there is not a problem.

"The driving rain will not stop the drive-in movie!"

PA weather forecaster Annemiek Wise said the blast of winter weather, which arrived a week after the start of British Summer Time, had been caused by two weather fronts meeting over northern England.

She said there would be heavy rain and strong, cold winds all day and a spell of snow in the afternoon, particularly over high ground.

Some spots on the North York Moors had seen snow this morning.

She said: "April is known as a month when winter suddenly returns and people get caught out by it."

North Yorkshire and Humberside Police both issued warnings to motorists today to take care when driving home from work.

l Tonight's showing at Asda starts at 7.30, and non-motorists can sit in covered grandstand seating.

Proceeds from tonight's big screen event will go to York District Hospital children's ward.
