I was sad to read the small-minded response of Selby District Council to the York Minster Bells Appeal (March 23).

The fact that the appeal is associated with the Queen Mother's 100th year is by the way. The bells are for the people of Yorkshire and will give pleasure to thousands.

Many people are immensely proud of Yorkshire's great heritage of cathedrals and churches and, in Selby, it is the Abbey. Selby people have one of the finest Abbeys in the country.

For many years I have been a supporter of Selby Abbey. How absurd it would be if I were to say I will not contribute again because I do not care for Coun Duggan's views.

I hope Selby District Council will re-consider its decision.

Mrs Patricia Cook,

Cawood, Selby.
