BENNOCHY (No 3), ridden by Ollie Pears storms through to victory at Catterick

New Earswick failed in their attempt to win the Hebden Trophy in the play-off final played at North Cave.

Their opponents Hull finished the stronger and duly took the title.

After five ends of play Hull led 22-19 but by ten ends New Earswick had moved into a 44-34 lead.

This was due to the home rink of Ken Lippett, Paul Jackson, Ron Wood and skip Malcolm Beavers coming back from being 8-1 down to 8-6 down and the rink of Mike Pulpher, Gordon Storey, Alf Lewis and skip Ken Carter turning round a 7-4 deficit into a 15-10 lead.

However, by 15 ends Hull were back in front with the score 65- 55.

By 18 ends Hull had the winning post in sight with the lead now extended to 79-65, with the rink of Mike Pearce, Colin Fawcett, Barry Johnson and skip Ray Clark being stuck on nine shots for many ends.

However, the rink of Dave Kermode, Dennis Ellis, Gordon Thompson and skip Bob Machen battled well to lead 21-18.

Hull kept their cool and went on to win 93-72.

New Earswick did have the consolation of one winning rink and a drawing rink seeing Ken Carter's rink beating Malcolm Penny's Hull four 24-19.

New Earswick's Men are through to the final of the Over 55s League following their 71-57 win over Thornaby.

New Earswick had three winning rinks, two away and one at home.

The home winning rink was that of John Holtby, Pete Ransom, Bob Machen and skip Bob Edwards who won 21-11.

The two away winning rinks were Harry Rhodes, Ron Wood, Eric Ward and skip Bob Howland, who won 19-12, while Ken Lippett, Dave Sykes, John Allan and skip Jim Bone won 18-14.

York Ladies needed just one win from their remaining two matches to retain the Yorkshire Ladies League title.

Unfortunately they lost both games narrowly and the title has gone to Selby, who beat them last weekend 88-87.

The week before York faced Ryedale, but although they had three winning rinks this was not sufficient to stop Ryedale from winning as one of York's away rinks lost heavily to the rink skipped by former England International Betty Stubbings.

Also in the Yorkshire Ladies League, New Earswick suffered a defeat at the hands of North Cave 76-94.

New Earswick did have two winning rinks, the best performance being that of Pat Walker, Moyra Headley, Maureen Wood and skip Gill Clark who beat North Cave's Di Bielby's rink 29-18.

But one rink lost heavily playing away going down 41-8, which effectively lost the game.
