It was a day for firsts at Catterick yesterday.

Merryvale Man gave retired Harrogate butcher Arthur Key his first win on the turf as an owner in the one-and-a-half mile handicap.

Four-year-old Pisces Lad was a winner for the first time on his 20th attempt in the maiden, giving jockey Jamie Spencer his fourth winner in five rides for Thirsk trainer David Barrow.

And Alan Berry, son of trainer Jack Berry, gained his first win on the turf as he rode 16-1 shot Bennochy to success in the classified stakes.

"I have had one winner on all-weather and one over the jumps, But this is the one that counts," said Berry.

"He is a horse who has always shown plenty of ability at home but hasn't reproduced it on the course."
