Reader's letter

I read with interest that York Tourism Board are hoping to welcome more German visitors to our city of York, as they are well known for spending lots of money (March 20).

Recently my husband and I stayed in the Cala Millor area of Majorca.

The resort was full of Germans, and I was very disappointed at their anti-social behaviour towards the British people.

We were given a leaflet by a girl on the promenade who obviously mistook us for Germans. It was offering coach tours around Majorca for a lot less than we had been quoted by our courier.

We decided to book a coach tour so went along to the office. The woman at the desk told me: no you are English, not allowed on this coach trip.

That was really a surprise as we are all part of the EC and carry a European passport. I was not happy at the way she laughed and replied: "Oh! You English!" She made me feel a second class citizen.

Later on that day we were also told by a Spanish waiter that French, German and Italian pensioners are given a month's free holiday at Spanish hotels to keep the Spanish hotels full through the winter.

They also receive vouchers to spend in hairdressers shops and coach tours! They get a lot more than pensioners in the UK receive.

Now they have sold the BMW and Rover factory, can you trust anything to the Germans?

We only hope they do not try their attitude "we are the best" on their visits to York. I remain a disgruntled tourist.

Mrs B Petitt,

Walmgate,

York.
