Vibration of the soft palate, uvula, pharyngeal walls or epiglottis is the cause. A sound akin to a cold-ridden wild boar hunting for truffles is the symptom. And the problem is widespread: one in five sleepers are loud snorers.
Snoring is an unusual condition, in that the patient is blissfully oblivious but his partner suffers untold anguish. Now a Harrogate hospital says it can offer permanent relief with a treatment which should banish noisy nights forever.
But at £1,210, the bill alone is likely to keep you awake at night. It looks like a cotton reel stuck to the back still remains the best option for the poorer snorer and his partner.
