Athletes from all over Britain came to West Yorkshire for the Spen 20-mile road race, as this year it incorporated both the Yorkshire and Inter-County championships.

The race, which started in Cleckheaton and involved 1,150 feet of ascent, was won by Jamie Reid, representing the Scottish West District in a time of 1 hr 47 mins 59 secs.

Making her debut was Jane Shelmerdine (Knavesmire Harriers) and impressed on her first run for the Yorkshire team.

She was helped by her team-mates Denis Dean (Pudsey Pacers) and Sue Carris (Bingley Harriers) to win the Inter-Counties Gold medal with the North East team second and Lancashire finishing third.

Shelmerdine, who completed the tough course in 2 hours 22 minutes and 8 seconds, also claimed the bronze medal in the Yorkshire Championship with Dean taking the gold and Carris the silver.

Shelmerdine will now focus on the Flora London Marathon where another sub three-hour performance, which she achieved in the 1999 event, will be her target.
