Gareth Jones celebrated his call-up to the Yorkshire under-21 squad with a fine performance for City of York.

ACOUNTY CALL: City of York's Gareth Jones, left, has been selected in the Yorkshire under-21s squad for the Northern Region tournament to be staged in Cheshire next weekend

Jones joins the White Rose squad for next weekend's North of England under-21 tournament at Oxton, Cheshire, for the round robin group games against Lancashire, Durham and Cheshire for a place in the National Under-21s finals to be played next month.

However, he was in action last weekend for his club side as they asked him to play a new sweeping role in their friendly clash against Ben Rhydding in Ilkley.

However, despite Jones' impressive display, it was a City old boy who stole the limelight as ex-York keeper James Baughan kept his former colleagues at bay as Rhydding won 2-1.

City gave Matthew Couttie and Colin Moore their first-team debuts and the side started strongly with Baughan making three good stops inside the opening 20 minutes.

Pressure told when Baughan was only able to parry a fierce shot from Glyn Humphrey and Moore was on hand to mark his first appearance with a goal.

They might have improved that lead only for Baughan to produce an excellent save to deny Chris Dutton, but in the second period City could not maintain their form and with 20 minutes remaining Ben Rhydding equalised and then grabbed a winner five minutes from the end.

There was still league business to be completed for City of York III as they took on Sheffield Bankers III in a re-arranged Yorkshire League fixture and drew 1-1.

They produced one of their best performances of the season but slipped behind when the ball hit feet on the goal-line and Sheffield duly scored from the resultant penalty flick.

City hit back and some excellent approach work eventually paid off with Simon Williams levelling after pressure had forced a short corner.

City of York V enjoyed a good run-out in a friendly clash against Ben Rhydding VI in Ilkley returning home 3-1 victors.

They opened the scoring through Russell Grant from a short corner but Rhydding replied before half-time.

However, Joel Johnson restored City's lead before the interval and the second period belonged to City who cruised to success with a sweet effort from Clive Mill-Hicks settling the issue.

City of York VII gained an impressive 2-1 win at Wakefield IV and could have won far more comfortably.

Against the run of play Wakefield took the lead but then a superb solo effort from Mark Dransfield put them level and in the second period skipper Dick Bowen set up James Still with the winner.

However, City of York VIII had a struggle on their hands as they took on Wakefield III and, despite some excellent work by goalkeeper Mark Burn, they were beaten 4-0.

The City of York Veterans enjoyed a 2-1 success over Bourne with Roz Ramli hitting both goals, while the City of York Mixed team collected six points with a 4-0 win over Slazengers - double points were awarded sue to the end of season fixture backlog.

City of York under-14 girls had a tough time in the Yorkshire Youth League as they went into their weekend programme of three matches with a much-depleted side.

They put up a good showing against eventual winners Doncaster but were beaten 3-0,.

They then gained a creditable goalless draw with Wakefield before going down 2-0 to Bradford.
