The frocks have been photographed, the tears have been shed and the whole spectacular circus is over for another year.

York's Janet McTeer came away from Oscar night empty handed, but another theatrical daughter of the city, Dame Judi Dench, could console her with the words: "Better luck next time." She was pipped to the statuette in the 1998 ceremony only to triumph the following year.

But Janet should not be disappointed. Few knew of her wonderful talent before the Oscars. Now she is an international name. And she has just attended the most spectacular bun-fight in the showbiz calendar. That must be considered an excellent night's work for the former Queen Anne pupil.
