The victim of a vicious assault in a York street was today in hospital with serious head injuries.

A 37-year-old man from the York area suffered facial fractures and numerous cuts to his face which required stitches.

The attack happened at about 11.15pm yesterday outside the Red Lion pub in Merchantgate, and police are appealing for witnesses.

A police spokesman said they received a phone call from the landlord of the Red Lion saying there was a fight taking place outside.

The victim was found lying on the ground with serious head injuries.

A spokeswoman for York District Hospital described his condition as "comfortable".

A man has been arrested and was this afternoon helping police with their inquiries.
