Free to roam Peter Swan admits he has turned down offers from elsewhere to try to land a permanent home at Bootham Crescent.

TRIAL: Peter Swan in action last night

The 33-year-old former Leeds, Hull City and Port-Vale stalwart featured impressively alongside Martin Reed in the heart of the City reserve defence last night in their 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury.

Released by Burnley last week, Swan, who can also play as a striker, will now train with City and feature for the reserves again next week so York boss Terry Dolan can assess his fitness.

But after an assured display last night, Swan, who played under Dolan at Boothferry Park, is keeping his fingers crossed that he will be offered terms.

Speaking to the Evening Press, he said: "Having been released by Burnley it is a case of finding somewhere.

"I have had a couple of clubs that have made contact but York is the one I have taken up."

The Wakefield-based Swan added: "City would be ideal for me. It's a great club and close to me.

"Terry knows me as a person, knows my ability obviously, but he needs to know I can still do it."

Swan revealed he was out of action at Turf Moor for almost a year after damaging his cruciate ligament.

He returned to the fringes of the Burnley first-team at Christmas but after making a couple of substitute appearances Clarets manager Stan Ternent let him go.

"I came back too early," admitted Swan.

"I was out of contract on a month to month and so I tried getting back quicker than I should have done.

"I kept getting little niggles here and there so now I am settling down and doing the right things by myself after games and I feel a lot better for it.

"I have come here, played and enjoyed it so we will take things from there. I have just got to show fitness and show that I won't be hobbling around the field."

City chief Dolan admitted he would be monitoring Swan's progress over the next seven days.

But after landing Blackburn Rovers keeper Alan Fettis yesterday, Dolan may also be lining up a move for Newcastle United's Paul Talbot, who featured impressively in last night's reserve match before being substituted after 60 minutes.

Gateshead-born Talbot, 20, was one of 13 players told they were no longer part of Magpies' boss Bobby Robson's plans last month.

With Wayne Hall still out and Christian Fox nursing a foot injury, Talbot, a player comfortable in midfield and defence, could help ease Dolan's concerns on the left.

Talbot's Geordie team mate Paul Arnison will definitely not be signing for York, however. After two reserve outings Dolan said he would not be following up his interest in the right-back.

Pontefract Collieries trialist Richard Marchant limped off after 70 minutes but Dolan said City would be maintaining contact with the 19-year-old.

Substitute James Turley salvaged City's second string a deserved point with a fine individual goal five minutes from time.

Austin Berkley had given Shrewsbury the lead with a 30-yard drive past Bobby Mimms on 15 minutes.
