Scarborough's youngsters proved their worth last night as Colin Addison's side wiped away some of the misery of Saturday's shock FA Trophy exit.

All the goals in the 3-0 victory over Southport were scored by players no older than 22 years.

And it was only after the last one went in that the visitors to the McCain Stadium threatened 24-year-old Boro 'keeper Andrew Woods' goals.

Right-back Matty Russell, 22, set up two of the goals, the first being scored by 22-year-old Chris Tate - in the side after recovering from a bout of flu - who swept home a tricky cross at the far post.

Centre-back Shaun Rennison then coolly grabbed only his second-ever senior goal, after Tate and Paul Ellender had set him up.

The 19-year-old from Northallerton volleyed home from near the penalty spot to double the lead.

Not long afterwards, 19-year-old Stewart Morris - reinstalled in the starting line-up - grabbed his first-ever goal for the Boro first team.

Russell's run and pass to the edge of the area found the pacy Geordie who cracked home a super strike.

Southport, who then decided to threaten at the other end, could easily have had a penalty when Boro substitute Mark Tyrell appeared to handle the ball in the area.

But it wasn't to be, and Boro's remarkable defensive home record - they haven't conceded a league goal at the McCain Stadium in 13 hours of football - continues.

Scarborough: Woods, Russell, Rennison, Jones, Ellender, Betts, Bass (Tyrell 5, Brunton 83), Stoker, Morris, Tate, McNiven.

Southport: Dickinson, Morley, Guyett, Bolland, Clark, Stewart, Grayson (Mike 73), Pell (Forman 73), Gouck, Arnold, Elam (Ellison 46).

Referee: R. Booth (Sutton-in-Ashfield).

l Lady Luck smiled on hosts North Ferriby last night as they knocked Selby out of the Northern Counties East League President's Cup to claim a semi final spot.

Nathan Stead twice gave the hosts the lead in this replay, firstly with a 20-yard drive and then with a superb individual run and strike.

But twice Peter Collier grabbed deserved equalisers for Selby, the first being a 22-yard half-volley into the bottom corner and the second an angled run and reverse shot in the dying seconds of the match.

Bad finishing and fine goalkeeping by the hosts' Paul Sharp had otherwise kept the visitors out, and two extra time goals at the other end by Simon Wood - after a Matt Potter save - and Andy Flounders sealed Selby's fate.
