Before the war, people who lived in the countryside in general also made their living in the countryside, equally the people who made their living in towns lived in the towns.
Today the majority of the people who live in villages make their living in nearby towns and cities. They may well have lived in the countryside for many years and also played there at weekends, but they see it through the eyes of poets and painters, (people noted more for romanticism than realism) and have no concept of the countryside as a place of work.
