I am writing in response to Heather Taylor's letter about Berwick Kaler. Like Heather, (January 22), I am one of his ardent fans, since his first appearance as the dame in the York Theatre Royal. He is the best dame I have ever seen perform. He caters for all ages, bringing in a little discreet 'naughtiness' without any sleaze.
York has attracted him every year and his public following has multiplied to thousands. He is York's Mascot. What pleasure he has given to all and his heart stretches out to even the unfortunate ones.
His charity work is astounding and a lot of it remains anonymous. He is extremely modest yet he has such diverse talents. I have watched his 'serious' TV roles and they are excellent too. But sorry, Berwick, you remain the King of Comedy and we love you best as the dame.
With your yearly appearances you never cease to surprise us with something different and usually better. Please continue to bring sunshine to York, on our cold winter days.
