Scarborough chairman John Russell said the club is taking legal advice over a discrepancy in its accounts of more than £19,000.
The unaccounted for sum stems from a four month period in 1998 when the club was run by Anton Johnson.
The report, by the club's accountants, does not implicate him in anyway but current chairman Russell, who seized back the club from Johnson, said Boro were in discussions with solicitors ahead of the club's annual general meeting on February 15.
"We have been taking advice and so when it comes to the AGM next month we hope to have some answers as regards to the legal situation," he said.
Since the end of the Johnson saga, which ended last season with Boro falling into the Nationwide Conference, the club has enjoyed an upturn in fortunes both on and off the field.
The Seasiders have now gone more than ten hours without conceding a goal as they bid to make a return to the Football League at the first attempt, while new owner and millionaire businessman Brooks Mileson has given Boro boss Colin Addison money to buy new players and helped put the club on a sound financial footing.
Meanwhile, York City were playing Scarborough today in a behind closed doors friendly at the club's Wigginton Road training ground.
The swiftly arranged friendly follows the postponement of tonight's Pontin's League division one encounter between the two clubs at the McCain Stadium, as reported in later editions of yesterday's Evening Press.
That match has now been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 8, at Scarborough, kick-off 7pm.
City manager Neil Thompson said today's match was an ideal opportunity for players short of games, like Craig Skinner, Scott Jordan, Martin Reed and Graham Rennison, to boost their match fitness.
The City chief, who said he may also play 45 minutes as he recovers from a calf injury, also revealed a couple of undisclosed trialists could be given a run out
The Seasiders have rearranged their Nationwide MacMillan Trophy quarter-final encounter with Doncaster Rovers, postponed last night due to a water-logged McCain Stadium pitch, to next Tuesday, February 1, kick-off 7.45pm.
