Teenager Andrew East, of Woldgate School, Pocklington, and a member of Nestle Rowntrees athletic club, began the new season with a double silver medal performance in the AAAs England and North of England Championships in Birmingham.

The 18-year-old decathlete started the day in fine form with a personal best in the 60m sprint with a time of 7.31seconds and followed it with further personal bests in the shot putt (9.55m) and the 60m hurdles (8.62 secs).

He finished the second day of competition with a fine run in the 1,000m with a time of 2 minutes 47 secs after been spiked at the start of the race.

Along with the pole vault of 3.60m, a long jump of 6.12m and high jump of

1.83m he amassed 4632 points and was rewarded with silver medals in both England and North of England sections.

East now hopes to carry on where he left off last year when he represents

England in the decathlon at Aberdeen.
