SCHOOL SPORT

A new artificial grass pitch at Queen Margaret's School, Escrick Park, was officially worn in at a special hockey tournament to celebrate its opening.

Sixteen prep schools from around the country took part in the invitation 7-a-side competition with teams coming from as far afield as Scotland and Somerset.

After being split into four groups, the teams which made it through to the semi-finals were Hill House (Doncaster), Beeston Hall (Norfolk), Ripon Choir School and Mowden Hall (Sunderland).

In the final Hill House, conquerors of Mowden Hall, defeated Beeston Hall 4-3 to take the trophy. Imogen Woods, from Ripon Choir, won the player of the tournament award.

The host school did not field their strongest side and, as expected, did not make it through the group stage.

Queen Margaret's sports facilities will improve further at the start of the summer term when a new competition size swimming pool will be ready for use.

NETBALL

Manor lord it up

TWO York netball teams will be heading to the National Schools finals to be held at Roedean School, Brighton, next month.

Joseph Rowntree and Manor under-16 teams made their way into the national finals after impressing in the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Tournament, held at Hull's Wolfreton School.

It was Manor School who took the limelight as they were crowned regional champions, playing seven games and winning them all.

Manor began well beating Woodhouse Grove 9-4 and followed that with an 8-4 victory over Bradford Girls Grammar School.

They then faced Newland School and, with excellent defending from goalkeeper Jodie Norman and captain Sally Howes, playing goal defence, Newlands were prevented from scoring and the match was won 6-0.

In the meantime Joseph Rowntree, confident before the tournament after weeks of intensive training, were making light of the poor weather conditions and they won their first game against Sheffield High 11-3.

Buoyed up by the confidence that win gave them, they added victories over Brinsworth 9-6 and Longcroft 11-3. It was then that the York rivals faced one another.

Joseph Rowntree had pipped Manor for the title in the previous two tournaments, but in the county rounds it was Manor who had been victorious.

Manor started the stronger and accurate passing by the centre court players Franky Myers, Chloe McKay and Helen Clegg and some excellent shooting by Emily Janes and Zoe Brown saw them go into a 7-4 lead at half-time.

Joseph Rowntree fought back to 8-6 in the second period, but lost the match 9-6.

Having gained the all-important win in the 'derby' clash, Manor played Sheffield and took an early 4-0 lead and, though their rivals fought back, stayed in front to win 8-7.

They went on to beat Brinsworth 8-4 and Longcroft 13-3.

Defeat against Manor meant that Joseph Rowntree had to win all their remaining games to qualify for the nationals.

Their players pulled out all the stops and won every match, beating Woodhouse Grove 11-3, Bradford Grammar 15-3 and Newland School 22-0 to ensure they were runners-up and joined Manor in Sussex.

Joanne Zinzan, the England team captain, presented the trophy to winners Manor.

The Manor squad, coached by Chris Howes and sporting their brand new track-suits sponsored by Railtrack, were: Zoe Brown, Emily Janes, Franky Myers, Chloe McKay, Helen Clegg, Sally Howes (capt), Jodie Norman and Carrie Pemberton.

The Joseph Rowntree under-16 squad was: Gemma Shaw (capt), Liz Davies, Debra Slater, Jo Phillips, Dawn Pashby, Jenny Carter, Helen Cordell, Katie Barrass.

The Joseph Rowntree under-19 team made a poor start in the wet and windy conditions, losing to eventual qualifiers Sheffield High 8-9 and Greenhead College 2-5.

Rowntree never really found their form and were placed a disappointing fifth.

Their other results were: v Longcroft won 15-4; v Hayfield drew 12-12; v Allerton won 12-7; v King James lost 2-14; v Wilberforce lost 6-9.

Under-19 squad: Faye Pashby (capt), Amy Snow, Chloe Graham, Katy Neep, Emily Keen, Louise Perrins, Julie Ely, Amy Cunnington.
