I must respond to the letter from R D Wilson ('Wrong Signal', January 22) for the lack of humanity and understanding expressed therein to those who live on our streets. City of York Council is to be commended for allowing the new night shelter in Leeman Road. As are the proprietors of Juice Up who hand out their left over sandwiches to the homeless.
Many homeless people are there through no fault of their own. They are part of our community and as such any authority has an obligation to protect vulnerable people such as these. Fortunately, York and other councils take this view. I went out for the evening in the city centre and it was a refreshing change not to see a single person sleeping in shop doorways.
