The proud parents of York's Golden Globe-winning actress Janet McTeer are "thrilled" with their daughter's new super-stardom.

Jean and Allan McTeer still live in Cyprus Grove, Haxby, where their phone hasn't stopped ringing since the award was announced in Los Angeles last night.

Janet, an old girl of Queen Anne School in York, was named best actress in a musical or comedy film for her performance as a Southern mum in Tumbleweeds.

Among her well-known UK television performances was the starring role of Lynda La Plante's The Governor, in which she plays the hard-nosed chief of a tough prison.

Before the ceremony, watched by an estimated 300 million people worldwide, Janet said of the star-studded show: "This is my first time at something like this. It is very, very silly and it is very funny."

And after the glittering bash an exhausted Janet phoned her parents to say she was overwhelmed by what had happened.

Jean said: "We've had an absolute hotline here today. Family, friends and even the local vicar have been ringing to congratulate us and Janet.

"When Janet phoned us she was shattered. She hasn't had a minute to herself with all the press and everyone wanting to speak to her.

"I just said to her, 'who's a clever girl then?'.

"We're not a theatrical family and she's had no foot up the ladder and no connections. We're all absolutely thrilled."
