JUST CHAMPION: Luke Atkin celebrates his title success
Young York boxer Luke Atkin has lifted his first title, writes Dave Stanford.
The 12-year-old Burnholme Community College pupil continued his winning start to his amateur career by winning the Yorkshire and Humberside Schoolboy championship.
Atkin beat a tough opponent in Bridlington's Ben Cunningham to win the 42kg contest on a unanimous decision at the Churchwell Amateur Boxing Club in Wath-on-Dearne.
It was his fifth straight win in as many contests and means he now goes forward to the North-East championships next month.
He trains at York's Colossus Gym but travels three times a week for coaching at St Paul's ABC in Hull.
Atkin receives sponsorship for his boxing endeavours from York businessman and Stonebow Snooker Club owner Tom Tunstall.
